Bob Gurr is more than just a theme park designer—he’s a true pioneer in the world of attraction engineering. Bob began his career studying industrial design at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. After graduating, he was hired by Ford Motor Company in 1952 but left shortly after to start his own design business. His big break came in 1954 when he was hired as a consultant for WED Enterprises (the predecessor to Imagineering) to help design the Autopia cars at Disneyland.

His introduction to Walt Disney himself was as unique as Bob’s career. While discussing the Autopia chassis with a group of Disney staffers, Bob was unaware that the “old guy” asking questions was none other than Walt Disney. It wasn’t until Walt formally introduced himself weeks later that Bob realized who he had been casually chatting with. From that moment on, Bob would go on to work closely with Walt on some of the most iconic attractions in Disney history.

What did Bob Gurr design?

Bob’s designs include not only the Autopia cars but also the futuristic Viewliner and the groundbreaking Monorail , which was developed with technology from Germany’s Alweg. Bob’s sketches were so revolutionary that Walt famously asked him, "Bobby, can you build that?" Despite the challenges, Bob helped bring these rides to life and shape Disneyland into the innovative park it is today. His work continued to make waves with designs for the Matterhorn Bobsleds, the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, and early Audio-Animatronic technology. Even after leaving Disney in 1981, Bob’s career extended into projects like the animatronic T-Rex for Jurassic Park and the King Kong figure at Universal Studios.
